Yesterday, I graduated high school. Because I was the valedictorian, I was asked to give a speech. This was my time to shine. My time to show everyone what I believed and who I truly was. I was planning on indulging the audience with tales of individuality and social equality. Unfortunately, my principal felt differently. Before going on he told me that if I spoke out of line he would have someone turn off the microphone and blame it on the faulty speaker system. Yesterday, I learned that it doesn’t matter how hard I work to achieve anything, I will always be oppressed. Whether it be by the government and their lack of civil liberties for the gay community or by my high school principal, I will never actually be able to completely express who I am.

A bit saddening. This isn’t what schools are about.
